Version 1.6.2
Rating: 5/5
Bottom line: This is a brilliant app easy to use and customize. It uniquely solves the problem.
Pros: intuitive interface, easy to use, the notification looks really nice and it’s free
Cons: the next and previous shortcut keys overlap with vlc. It’s customizable though
What it does: Suppose you are listening to iTunes and you are surfing web on safari. You want to change the song that’s playing for some reason and you don’t want to switch back and forth between safari and iTunes. Sizzling Keys is the perfect solution for you.
Sizzling Keys is a program that allows you to use short cut to control iTunes even when it’s not the active(either in background or not running at all). For example, you can press command right arrow to skip to the next song. You can also create shortcut to rate the song. You can also control the volume by using command up or command down. Also whenever the song change, it displays a nice notification for what song is playing like the one below.

Another nice feature of this program, is that you can search through your library. Of course, iTunes doesn’t have to be the active application. Sizzling keys will have a nice floating transparent windows for you to do the job.
Lastly, this program comes with a preference pane so you can define shortcut and many more customizations.
In case you try this program and you don’t really like it, here are some alternatives
